Wheat Foods Council Announces Addition of New Spanish Materials
PARKER, Colo. (September 2, 2009). The Wheat Foods Council is announcing six more of their materials that are now available in Spanish.

“With the Hispanic population on the rise in the United States, we wanted to have materials available to serve that audience,” said Lynn Holly, Interim Director of the Council. “Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority group, making up 15 percent of our nation’s population. Translating a variety of our materials into Spanish only makes sense,” she continued.

The Hispanic population is no longer limited to the “border states” to the south. Sixteen states now have Hispanic populations of at least a half million residents. In addition to California, Florida and Texas, longstanding states with large Spanish-speaking populations, other states include Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. Both North and South Carolina had the highest percentage increases in Hispanic populations during 2008.

The number of Hispanic households in the United States in 2008 reached 10.4 million, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures. Of those households, 62 percent included children younger than 18. For the first time in census history, Hispanic surnames ranked among the 15 most common. Garcia was the most frequent, placing 8th on the list, up from 18th in 1990. Rodriguez was listed 9th, Martinez at 11th, and Hernandez 15th.

The Spanish materials now available are Sugerencia de Granos Integrals Para Cada Comida y que Agradaran a la Familia (Family Friendly Whole Grain Ideas), 50 Alimentos a Base de Granos Inegrales (List of 50 Grain Foods), Lista de Alimentos con Fibra (List of Fiber Foods), Enriquezcase con las Fibras (Get Rich in Fiber), El Grano del Trigo (Kernel of Wheat [poster and handout]), and MiPiramide Pasos Hacia Una Mejor Sallid (MyPyramid Mini Poster). These materials join our two other Spanish pieces, Granos Faciles (Whole Grains Made Easy) and Los Granos Integrales Para Toda la Familia (Whole Grains for Kids), which were added in 2007. All Wheat Foods Council materials can be found on our web site.

The Council is supported voluntarily by wheat producers, millers, bakers, and related industries.
